Gloria comes from Ghana to England in a small boat In a dream. She is strong and independent. Her mission is to succeed as a singer, be accepted by the English and to find love with George. Her hero state is Ghanaian goddess Asase Ya.
George English is lost in life and frustrated at his work in a dream factory. He dreams of having a farm to share with a woman he loves. His mission is to slay his Fear Dragon and find love with Gloria. His Hero state is Saint George.
Burly patriarch Arthur is George’s dad. He espouses old values - England is for the English and men should love war. He is angry at himself as England's national hero, because he failed in his mission to stop the invasion of the Angles and Saxons.. His hero state is King Arthur.
Britney is George’s mum. She is materialistic, she loves “things” like those "we won" in the British Museum. She realises later that love and forgiveness are more important. Her hero state is Britannia.
Boo is George’s punky sister. Whatever the problem, the solution is destruction. She patronises but also defends ickle Georgie. Her hero state is Boudicca - Celtic Warrior Queen.
Tyburn, a violent racist, is George’s brother and leader of the Border Brigaders. Tyburn is proud that the BBs keep England “pure”.. Ultimately, Tyburn is gene tested and finds he’s mixed race. His hero state is the river god of Tyburn Brook, which gave its name to the site of mass executions in old London..
Ottobah is George’s brother, away at “the War”. Ottobah Cugoano was a real person, taken as a teen into slavery from Ghana, who escaped from the Caribbean to settle in London. He is famed for publishing his literary account of enslavement. His War is against slavery, lies and corruption. His hero state is his writer self.
Robot Rob, an actual robot, is George’s pernickety boss at the virtual dream factory.
The Border Brigaders are a buffoonish but dangerous squad who search for alien invaders and gene test all they find. Tyburn leads them in searching for Gloria in order to expel her.
The young blind Queen of England. She longs to end the War against the Dragon but is obstructed by her conniving Minister. She hears Gloria sing I Trust In Me from her palace window and wants the song to be the new national anthem.
The Queen’s Minister seeks to continue the War but reluctantly complies with the Queen’s demand to find Gloria after the Queen hears her song..
